Registration: Weighting

Kevin McGee and Diego Zardetto, authors of Chapter 8 of the Handbook, will take participants through the process of producing survey weights for probabilistic surveys of households and individuals — from the underlying principles to their translation into practical, hands-on steps.

This section covers the foundational principles behind weight calculations, as well as the core weighting steps that form the heart of the chapter — design weights, adjustments for non-response, and calibration. Participants will also gain guidance on additional steps in the weighting process, including eligibility adjustments and trimming. With the survey practitioner firmly in mind, the session places particular emphasis on developing weights for multistage sample designs and introduces diagnostics that help monitor and safeguard quality throughout the weighting process. The session will close by venturing into more specialized territory, discussing weighting considerations for panel surveys and pooled samples, and examining how the principles and techniques developed for probability samples can be extended to non-probability samples.

The webinar will then open into a panel discussion with country representatives, exploring how the guidance in Chapter 8 is shaping national weighting practices, identifying where more detailed guidance or practical examples would strengthen its usefulness, and considering what tools, training, or cross-country collaboration would best support countries in putting the recommendations into practice.
