After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. There will be time for questions. The webinar will be recorded and made available on the IASS and ISI web site. See below for the abstract and biography of the speakers.

Webinar Abstract

Substitution of a nonresponding unit with one not originally selected in the sample is a commonly used method for dealing with unit nonresponse. Although frequently used in practice, substitution is largely neglected in the survey sampling literature. To date, few studies have attempted to develop a formal framework for describing and evaluating substitution methods, and little research has been done to improve estimates obtained through the use of substitution as a nonresponse adjustment procedure. In this presentation, I will show results from simulation and empirical studies conducted to enhance our understanding of substitution methods and present new procedures to improve them.

Biography

Raphael Nishimura is director of sampling operations of the Survey Research Operations (SRO) within the Survey Research Center (SRC) at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research (ISR). He has been working with sampling and survey statistics for over fifteen years. He holds a PhD in Survey Methodology from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics from the University of São Paulo. His main research interest includes sampling methods, survey nonresponse and adaptive/responsive designs. He is also the director of the Sampling Program for Survey Statisticians of the SRC Summer Institute for Survey Research Techniques.  Every survey statistician knows the calibration method developed by Jean-Claude Deville and Carl-Eric Särndal. Unfortunately, Jean-Claude Deville passed away in November 2021. He was one of the most important survey statisticians of our time. This webinar is dedicated to his memory. First, we remind the most important contributions of Jean-Claude to survey statistics. Next, we focus on two of his contributions: calibration and cube method (balanced sampling). We show some very recent developments related to: 1) calibration with high-dimensional auxiliary data sets and 2) statistical matching of survey data trough calibration, optimal transport and balanced sampling.
